The strptime class method is handled similarly to the strftime instance method, though it is more complex.
Instead of sprintf to format a string, for modifier characters in the format string, sscanf is used to read from the input string and assign values to local variables. If they are assigned correctly and they are valid, a state variable is updated with the field that is set.
