If you decide you want to implement something yourself, wouldn't you like to read code that is easy to follow, and designed specifically to be easy to modify, instead of code where optimization appears to be the main design objective?
I should point out that while Sequel isn't focused on performance, it remains competitive performance-wise with the other guys.
